The productive age varies considerably within the Iron Age suggesting that the deposit was added to over a period of time.

The Roman historian Tacitus, states that the Belgic refugees had thrown the objects into the lake when they fled into Anglesey from the Romans and that they had carried the fine pieces of bronze with them.

Many of the items originated in Somerset. Had the chieftains traded with them or did they bring them back as loot after a victorious battle?

But there were offerings in the lake dating from 200 years before the Roman invasion. Maybe they were spoils of war offered to the Celtic gods after a local tribal battle.
